On June 19,2003, the Hellenic Navy sunk off Crete, ex-USS Richard E.Byrd (DDG-23), a destroyer never in service with the HN, which used it solely for spares, in order to support its operational quartet of C.F.Adams-class destroyers. DDG-23 was sunk after being hit by a MM-38 Exocet SSM, fired from 32,000 yds away, by HS Blessas (P-21), two Penguin SSMs, fired from 22,000 yds away, by HS Starakis (P-29) and two Mk 8 torpedos, launched one each ,by HS Lelaps (P-54) and HS Typhon (P-56). HMAS Hobart DDG-39

Brisbane is slated to be sunk as a dive wreck off the Queensland coast, however political debate has stalled the process. Exposed to the element and with no upkeep crew, she's starting to look very tatty. A sad end for a proud ship.

HMAS Brisbane (DDG 41) tied up alongside the ex Naval base of Platypus

in Sydney harbour.

HMAS BRISBANE, leaves Sydney Harbour for the last time enroot to Brisbane where she will be prepared for sinking as a dive wreck off the Queensland coast As you can see, Brissy has had a lot of her removed (Bridge section etc) This is all now at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, where it is to be set up so that people can walk through the bridge.  The picture was taken on 7/15/2004 with the HMAS Brisbane arriving at the Port of Brisbane on 7/19/2004.
